Ok, so full disclosure - these are not mine! The author of the blog linked these on Cohost back before it shut down, and I think they're extremely informative and interesting. A lot of context that passes by most of us in Anglosphere spaces gets explained!

Why You Don’t See New Magical Girl IPs the Way There Used to Be (It’s Not Because of Madoka)

In today's post, H.C., having heard the fallacy "Madoka killed the magical girl genre and made everything into ironic parodies or nostalgia milking" one too many times, goes into the actual reasons you don't really see as many new magical girl IPs nowadays and discusses how people who often claim to be "defending" the genre are actually just as guilty of underestimating it.

The Myth of Madoka’s Influence on Magical Girls, and Why It Barely Did Anything Compared to PreCure

H.C. goes into the myth of Puella Magi Madoka Magica's influence on the magical girl genre again, this time tackling how the series was actually received by its Japanese and Western audiences when it aired in 2011, and also goes into PreCure and how its cultural clout is probably way more than you even realize.

The first link also goes into a lot of detail about why the following slew of reboots, sequels, and spinoffs exists:

I hope people here find them interesting!

Does anyone remember this series??

"As the mermaid princess of the North Pacific (one of the seven mermaid kingdoms), Lucia entrusts a magical pearl to a boy who falls overboard a ship one night. Lucia must travel to the human world to reclaim her pearl and protect the mermaid kingdoms. Using the power of music Lucia is able to protect herself and the mermaid kingdoms from a growing evil force."

The description sounds more majestic than the silly school story it is!

For the December talking meme, [personal profile] lielac prompted: "Talk about your top 3-5 magical girl shows/anime/manga/things!"

(not that I'm going to be terribly precise about the rankings, here.)

Puella magi
Top Two: Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica )

Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne )

Recommended for anyone who likes:
  • the identity-porn angle in Miraculous Ladybug
  • the Lupin/Zenigata dynamic in Lupin III, but with ladies
  • ridiculous off-the-wall Japanese adaptations of Christian mythology
  • pre-Madoka takes on "this magical-girl universe turns out to be way darker than it first appears"

Saint Tail )

Recommended for anyone who likes:
  • "let's go steal an X" as a heroic catchphrase
  • Steven-Universe-type "whoops, it turns out my mom got up to some shady things in the past, and now I've gotta use what I've inherited from both my parents to make it right"
  • Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, but maybe a little less weird, and the romance is cuter
  • everything is relentlessly adorable

Tokyo Mew Mew )

Recommended for anyone who likes:
  • Captain Planet, but with Japanese furries
  • the Sailor Moon villains in the Black Moon and Makaiju arcs
  • Catradora, but the angsty part is temporary and resolved
  • unusually good shoujo gender politics
  • bird lesbians

Honorable Mention

I didn't put Revolutionary Girl Utena or Read or Die on the list. Decided they were too genre-adjacent to really rank. And this is already longer than I meant it to be, so I'm not going to do a whole sidebar about them anyway.

Short version: they're also very good, and you should give them a look!

Hey there guys! I thought I'd pop in with a recommendation that I figured at least some of y'all would be interested in: the Youtube series Mahou Profile, by Youtube user ErynCerise! It's a series designed to track the creation and development of the magical girl genre from the very beginning: part history, part analysis, and part Eryn's personal opinion of various milestone series in the magical girl genre. It's super informative and sparks some interesting thoughts on what makes magical girls "magical girls," and the elements that have been trendy and dropped from the genre over time! The vids are pretty in-depth, so it doesn't update incredibly frequently, but the vids currently out are definitely worth a watch and I would recommend keeping an eye on it over time!

Mahou Profile also has a planned companion series, Mahou Mini, in order for Eryn to do more brief reviews of current/ongoing magical girl series, considering that she likely won't be making it to modern-day series for QUITE a while in the main Mahou Profile series. Thus far she's only reviewed Magical Girl Site (spoilers: she did NOT like it), but I'm sure there's more to come!

Anyway, it's nice to meet you all, and I hope this comm (and DW fandom in general!) takes off the ground! :)

In the spirit of stirring up more activity in this comm: a roundup of my favorite funny Sailor Moon fics!

They're in order from "the site was easy to share from" to "the site was hard to share from," meaning it starts with AO3 fics and works all the way down to ancient .txt files. (Which still make me laugh, so they're in.)

Includes a few crossovers, including The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, Ranma 1/2, and Pinky And The Brain.

The King and Queen are away on holiday, leaving nine senshi and eventually three starlights with a three year old. No problem, right? )
