Sanism in audience reception

Sometimes I think about how audience responses can say as much about ableist attitudes as works themselves do.

The music video for the song "Monitoring" by Deco*27 initially reads as "Miku is a scary stalker", but the narrative woven by the whole seems to be more "the pov character is having paranoid delusions and hallucinations, Miku is a concerned friend trying to check up on them, pov character eventually works up the courage to open the door and speak to their friend". Much more nuanced that how I've usually seen popular Vocaloid songs handle mental illness. There's a lot of bad edgy "look at this crazy sicko murderer, who kills people because they're insane" in Vocaloid music. The song is kind of leaning into those ideas, but ultimately I think subverts the expectations of them.

When I was reading the first few comments on it, I saw a Japanese comment that (auto-translated) was like "at first it seemed Miku was a dangerous person, but then actually it was the classmate who was a dangerous person!" And. Like. There are no signs the pov character is going to harm anyone. Dangerous... why? Just because they're having a break with reality that makes them scared to leave their apartment? I'd also seen English language bad takes, but that specific comment kind of stuck with me.

More recently, the producer published a miku pov version, it's genuinely sweet:

(Miku switching to the "hallucinatory" version at the end of the song seems to mainly be to mirror the original version. I've seen a few youtube comments argue that it means Miku really was a yandere all along, which I don't think... is narratively compatible with the rest of this song, or with the original song. When people aren't treating the POV character as "crazy dangerous" in comments and posts, they're sometimes instead putting that on Miku's shoulders, even when talking about the Best Friend remix.)

Unfortunately, when I looked on Tumblr for analysis of the best friend remix, I saw someone basically imply the pov character's delusions (of their friend being a "yandere" stalker-with-a-crush) would lead them to... sexually assault... their friend:

At the end of the song when Listener finally opens the door to let Miku in, Miku is unaware she's confronting someone who has convinced themselves that Miku "wants" the same kind of contact Listener is about to carry out.

Which feels deeply unwarranted to me from what the original song implies about the POV character's mental state, and falling into that same "people with delusions are dangerous monsters" thing that the Japanese commenter was doing.

I also find it irritating that sympathetic reading of POV character I've found always just call them "depressed" and treat the distortions of dialog and visuals as purely metaphors for the negative worldview that accompanies depression, and like... That's possible. That's a valid reading of the music video. But why is it apparently so hard to imagine that the distortions are literally being experienced by the POV character because they're having a psychotic episode. and that they're sympathetic in how their mental illness harms and isolates them, at the same time?

This is the most sympathetic I've seen a Vocaloid song(s) be to someone having symptoms of really demonized mental illnesses, and people can't even... I guess you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.

I did spend an hour editing the Kaijuu No. 8 fic this morning, so the K-9 fever is truly no longer up to a vibration-inducing 11 XD Just a more manageable 8 or 9 depending on the hour of the day. And I really enjoyed rereading the last couple of chapters of the kn8 fic to remember where I was at. THESE GUYS :D This is for an OT3 that doesn't have any fic for it yet. I hope there'll be a couple of readers out there curious enough to check it out anyway, and see if they too can appreciate and share the vision :D

With the end of the year in sight, I've been thinking about how writing went this year. I am, of course, not meeting my [community profile] getyourwordsout pledge again (150K words), haha. It'll land around 114k. Wordcount-wise, it's been clear for a while that this would be my lowest year EVER since recordings began (aka 2020 ;)). For a couple of months there, it even looked like I might not even reach 100k, just because I was still editing so much and writing so short well into November. Then I picked up the kn8 fic to revise, and had to add and expand on a lot of missing scenes/do more showing (anchoring ;D) which helped a lot with finally reaching that milestone, phew. Little did I know K-9 would happen to me shortly after and make December the month with my second highest word count this year, haha.

Also, something interesting is going to happen in 2026! Adding all my word counts from 2020 until today, the total comes to 975K. Obviously, everything could go spectacularly to shit, but based on the past few years, there's a very good chance I'm going to reach that 1 million words milestone next year. I'm a bit nervous because I started writing again in 2020 firmly with a quote in mind, something I'd heard around the lines of "everybody has 1 million bad words in them before they can get to the good ones; unfortunately the only way to get rid of them is to write them out" and that's been a source of comfort when my writing doesn't always meet the standard I hope for. What will I do if word #1,000,001 is actually pretty crap anyway, though?? Haha. My mind is already preparing "well it wasn't 1M words of novel-sized projects, so you have to keep at it anyway" etc etc, so I will probably be okay either way ;)

But still. Something to look forward to :)

When we look back on this year's Wednesday-ish entries, we will think of it as the year we spoke about Juice=Juice. A lot. This is entirely not my fault, no one but [personal profile] luckyzukky could have predicted that the group were going to release a song like More! Mi Amore and that it was going to be such a terrific single. At the same of writing, I would actually put More! Mi Amore in my top ten idol releases this year—this song, in addition to =LOVE's Love Song ni Osowa Reru really brightened up this winter for me, they are both songs explicitly from this moment, and whenever I hear them in future, I am sure I will remember these days. No doubt, I will also be thinking of Kawashima Mifu.

Omifu

Omifu debuted with Juice=Juice in February with the release of the double A side, Hatsukoi no Bourei/Kon'ya wa Hearty Party, a single which mostly passed me by due to my extreme association of Juice=Juice with Karin, and only Karin. Despite this, I was aware of Omifu, not by name, but by sight, as I vaguely remembered the promotional material following the auditions which saw her win a place with the kenshuusei after having failed three separate prior auditions for a place with Morning Musume and ANGERME, as well as the joint Tsubaki Factory and Juice=Juice auditions. A year later finding her feet, however, she was awarded with a judge's prize during the research students' concert, and a year after that, with another award under her belt, it was announced she was joining Juice=Juice. But wait, you might proclaim, looking at this timeline, if she joined the group in 2023, why was her debut single in 2025? Ah! Alas! From the October following the announcement throughout most of 2024, Omifu was unable to perform due to a sudden loss of hearing that required both surgical intervention and a long, long period of recovery. I cannot begin to imagine how terrifying it must have been to have gone through that, to finally make it to where the start of where you want to be only to have something out of your control happen like that. I was completely unaware of all that Omifu was going through during this point, I wasn't even aware of her having joined Juice=Juice, but I am relieved to report that in April 2024, Omifu began to resume activities, leading us to where we are now, the release of More! Mi Amore sending her popularity skyrocketing.

In the Hello! Project Official Shop in late autumn, it came as no surprise to me that Omifu's photo that month had sold out. I first became aware of her around 2022-ish when she appeared in a video alongside Tanaka Reina, and I was struck by how emotional she was during the performance, mouthing her words as she danced before eventually burst into tears following the performance, but because I am an idiot, I didn't follow her career; in October, I felt more like an idiot for not having followed her as everything about her presence in More! Mi Amore stands out so vividly, from the skill of her dancing, to the delivery of her lines, to her presence amongst her peers. If I had been smarter in 2022, I would have made it my resolution to follow her, rather than arriving late to the party with everyone else. What is important is that I am here now though, just in time for the New Year! My resolution for 2026 will be to support Omifu more!

I forgot I was going to show off the crochet Christmas gifts I made! Which means I also forgot to take any pictures :,) I do have some of them still, since my brother's family all got sick just before Christmas and I haven't seen them, but I'd rather post it all at once. Gonna ask my sister to send me pics of what I gave her kids. I had a lot of fun with it and I'm pretty pleased with how all of it... well, with most of it came out, haha. I really need to give myself more time next year. Please ignore the fact that I say that every year ;>_>

That's it!! I think I've exorcised the worst of the fandom fever with this one. It combines a lot of happy images (I don't care if it's all tell-don't-show until the kissing begins, it's telling nice things!! XD). It makes me happy to make them happy, too. The previous angsty fic didn't come out easily, with a new-to-me (well, new-to-the-entire-fandom really 😆) PoV that didn't make it any easier. This one was only hard to edit because of all the happy noises I made rereading :D

And I'm finally able to hear my abandoned kn8 fic making sad kaijuu meeps again, phew. While K-9 is very most certainly in my top fandoms at the moment (and I'm looking forward to requesting it in [personal profile] candyheartsex in 2 days :D) (and also offer it, but, well, I also know how to keep my expectations in check for a fandom in which members can be counted on one hand XD) (wow totally got lost in my parenthesises here) ANYWAY I CAN ALSO THINK OF OTHER PROJECTS wooohoo who knew there were other things going on out there?!

I think I've settled on what I want my "personal curriculum" subjects to be. I don't want to start out doing too much and I didn't really give myself a lot of time to come up with a fancy lesson plan or anything, so I'm mostly sticking to things I can follow an existing structure for.

My first quarter is going to be focused on Korean, coding, algebra and clarinet. I bought the 90 Day Korean course on sale forever ago and forgot about it almost immediately. The program has four modules, each meant to take ninety days, hence the name, and so I figure I'll do one of those per quarter. I have previously started the first one but did-- and remember-- so little of it that I may as well start from scratch. I similarly bought and forgot about a couple of coding courses on Udemy-- one for JavaScript, one for Python-- and I want to finally complete those. I doubt I need a full quarter for either even if I don't study them every day, so I'm comfortable counting them as one "class" despite being two programs. I've been meaning to relearn math/improve my skills and while I probably don't really need to bust myself all the way back down to beginner's algebra, that is the last time I remember math making sense to me. I found a free math-learning resource online that has a set of algebra lessons I can divide more or less evenly across the quarter. And then there's clarinet. You guys may or may not remember how excited I was to get a clarinet for my birthday a few years back. I practiced for a while but fell out of the habit because... well. Embarrassment, tbh. I was very aware of the awful sounds I was making trying to get back into the groove. It was bad enough just thinking about it in terms of my mom having to hear me. But the walls here are kinda thin. Then at some point, one of my neighbors started practicing the saxophone. Understand that I say this with no hate in my heart: They were very, very irritating to listen to. Not even bad, really, just irritating. And I couldn't make myself pick my clarinet up again after that, silly as it is. Probably still couldn't if not for the current neighbors constantly carrying on and pissing me off, so I don't care if I irritate them with my squawking.

So, yeah, that's my plan. I might-- might-- toss on some kind of history or literature class at the last minute, based on some of the books I've got on-hand, and scramble to assign myself essays or something. I do have a couple of ideas knocking around. I'll probably save that sort of thing for the next quarter, though, assuming that this one goes well. I'd like to take the time to plan out anything that's going to require actual analysis or interpretation.

Did you know there's currently no streaming service in the USA that offers Princess Tutu?

No streaming service in the USA offers Fullmetal Alchemist (2003), either.

Obviously, I know how to pirate. And I also own the old ADV dvd set for Tutu in particular. But I can't help but think how it's a lot easier for media to maintain steady cult followings if you can find it long after it's being sold... rentals and stores for VHS tapes and DVDs had an important niche in allowing box office bombs to become cult classics, in old shows being watched by new generations.

What do you do if something new is only on streaming, and then gets taken down? I know this happens. These shows and movies arent even given the chance to acquire reputations over time.

I've watched Wolfwalkers via... means. Good movie! Has very little chance of being the generation-defining hit with tweenage wolfaboos god clearly intended it to be, because it's exclusive to Apple TV on streaming, and the only physical edition is hundreds of dollars for a collector's blu-ray set.

My yarn winder broke TAT

I'm not even sure what's wrong with it. All the gears are connected. A screw came loose and I had a heck of a time getting it open to fix that but, I mean. That's fixed. But the doggone thing's still not turning properly.

Tbf, it was a cheap gizmo and it showed its cheapness. Still, it worked so well until now. I'm not tossing it yet, just in case I can get it figured out. But I went ahead and bought a new one anyway. Still nothing very expensive but it's a well enough recommended brand and the design looks like it'll be easier to work with.

My main issue is that I was caking all my yarn to make it easier to store as well as use and obviously I had to stop that partway through. Not that I would've been able to get it all into my yarn chest anyway. I didn't even realize how much I had outside of the chest until I started trying to work out the logistics of getting it all in. Most of it fit, at least. As for what's left, I've currently got it next to the chest in tote bags. So much for breaking my yarn embargo to celebrate the new year, I'll say that, lol. Maybe-- maybe-- by the end of January. End of February is more likely. Seriously, what was past-me planning to do with all this??

To PROVE that I am able to make a post without a single mention of K-9 (oh no I already failed), please enjoy pictures of the bird friends I made at the park yesterday :D

Chill bird walking on concrete   Chill bird foraging in a flower bed

I call them magpies because that's what the black and white and beautiful blue-tinted tail colouring makes me think of, but I don't actually know. They are birb. And they are friendly!

One of them came to hang out with us when we took a little break, just sitting there, all puffy and chirping whenever we stopped paying attention to it. Really, surprisingly chill and friendly! I guess people around there are not jerks to them too much.

Puffy bird perching on wall

I know the quality of my pictures is terrible, but that's to encourage everyone to use their Power Of Imagination! I'm actually providing a great public service 😌

Also I'm no longer the only person posting for K-9 out there :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D And they write a PoV I'm less comfortable with (FOR NOW) and that is just AWESOME. Happy times!!! 🥳🥳

Can you guys believe that the new year is next week? What even is the onward march of time?

Tbh, I've been trying to wean myself off the idea that the start of a new [insert human calendar construct here] has to mean anything significant, as far as goals and life changes are concerned. I've not been terribly successful. There's just something so satisfying about matching new with new. It feels cleaner, somehow. And, of course, we're socialized to regard the start of a whole new year as an almost magical time.

I suppose if I were truly dedicated to fixing the part of my brain that rides or dies by the calendar, I'd deliberately eschew New Year's resolutions or goals that hinge on it. Buuut even the thought of doing that makes me feel physically ill-- I'm not even joking when I say typing that preceding sentence made my fingers go numb-- so I'm gonna have to just be nice to myself about this one. And, I mean, come on. It is kinda funny if I make "stop basing habits on human constructs of time" a New Year's resolution, yeah? I think it's kinda funny.

All this to say that I've been thinking about what goals I want to set for the year ahead. And I'm reeeally trying to narrow them down this year. I've got a bad habit of making everything I want to do a goal, which just overwhelms me to the point that I don't accomplish much of anything. It doesn't help that I tend to get too ambitious with a lot of things and then ruin things for myself. Still haven't fully grown out of that gifted kid mindset, in spite of my ongoing efforts. I might look at everything I would like to try to accomplish and then fold groups of those things into broad categories of goals. Y'know, "try more crafts" and "read more" kinds of items. Or else maybe write all those things out and rank them, then pick the top five as goals. Then whenever I mark something off the list, I can rotate in a lower-ranked item from the initial list. Up to a point at least. Something else I've been trying to get through my head is that not everything I want to do necessarily needs to be treated as a goal. If anything, that mentality is probably what overwhelms me, since I then unconsciously treat all those many things as more or less equally important.

But anyway, where are you all at as far as the end of the year? Are you giving it meaning in your life or is it just another day for you? I'm curious where everyone else stands.

Sudden awkward realization that Malcolm’s daemon has been “Asta” all along, I just took the spoken version as “Aster” with a British accent.

Have to go edit some roundup posts now…

(And here I was appreciating the celestial symbolism in how “Aster” means “star”!)

Spent some time this evening reviewing AO3’s character tags for His Dark Materials, along with The Book of Dust. There’s a handy tag format that only really picked up after I originally canonized most of them, “Petname | Fullname Character’s Pet”, as in “Alpine | Bucky Barnes’s Cat“. So I redid most of the daemon character tags to match that, as in “Asta | Malcolm Polstead’s Daemon“.

Some of them, it feels like overkill — not a lot of fans are likely to forget which Pantalaimon or Hester we’re talking about. But it’s really useful for the daemons whose names only came up briefly. Or maybe were only established outside the actual canon (e.g. author interviews, TV credits). Kyrillion, Jal, Grizal, Sergi…

The review also turned up some minor characters who weren’t canonized before because I couldn’t find info on them, and some characters who got newly-established full names after they were canonized. Also, at least one where the canonical had a typo. Whoops.

I have not audited the relationship tags to make sure they all match up. (Except the one with the typo.) To avoid overloading the servers, there’s a limit on how many tags each wrangler is supposed to rename per day, and doing the rels tonight would blow way past mine.

So that’s a future project.

I put most of my post-LBS reaction feelings as addendums in the liveblog roundup post, so I didn’t end up making a new microblogging thread about them.

In 2005, I was terribly invested in pop music, it was the thing that was keeping me afloat. I had first encountered Morning Musume few years earlier, and Toei's hero shows followed shortly after, first Gaoranger, then Ninpuu Sentai Hurricanger featuring Nagasawa Nao in the role of Nono Nanami. Being so far away from Japan, we had no real understanding of idol culture save for how we approximated what we came to know from magazines and websites. Anyway, long story short, I became an idol fan, and I started following both Nagasawa Nao and Yamamoto Azusa from Hurricanger. By the time 2005 had rolled around, we were five singles into Nagasawa's solo career, two on King Records, the rest on avex trax, whom she signed with in early 2004. I can't recommend her music to you, but at the same time, I have a cabinet full of records, and I was sad when, after 2007, the well dried up and the most we got was a "best of" record the year later, something that led to me feeling somewhat shortchanged by avex. Having said that though, it was also a relief as the material the label was giving her was pretty awful. Despite my resentment, avex were very proactive in the mid '00s, having launched the career of Hamasaki Ayumi and having a clear vision of the kind of idols they believed sold best—Hi-NRG songs and gravure photoshoots were the order of the day, and a lot of avex's acts did really well within the parameters of that milieu, dream were especially popular, if I remember rightly, as were PARADISE GO!! GO!!. To use an analogy that might be a little too niche, avex's idols felt like they were all from Ginza, and I think that was an approach that dominated the idol industry until AKB48's "idols you can meet" really blew the lid off everything.

In amidst all those pounding Eurobeat drums, the scent of excessive baby oil used in every gravure shoot, as you were beginning to feel a little lightheaded from all the hairspray used, there was always one thing that avex was good at doing, however, and that was promotion. If you were on avex, you were on billboards.

German text in a torn book, from episode 17 of Princess Tutu

This is a screenshot of Episode 17 (Timestamp 12:35 out of 20:41) of the cult classic metafictional fairy-tale anime Princess Tutu (2002).

Long ago, I saw a post that identified the exact source of the text in this image. The source, according to the post, was a German book or literary journal of some sort, discussing a landmark piece of German metafiction aimed at children. That novel, Die unendliche Geschichte (1972) by Michael Ende, was published in English-speaking countries as The Neverending Story. Does that name ring a bell? According to a survey from 2006, the original novel was most popular and successful in Germany and Japan; most Americans, meanwhile, were more familiar with the 1984 film adaptation.

My memory, I may have mentioned in previous posts, is not very good. The original post was witnessed so long ago that I do not even remember if it was late 2000's or early 2010's, late-Livejournal or early-Tumblr. I have tried searching both sites. I have never been able to find the original post. There is a post about German in Princess Tutu on the old LJ community; it does not cover this episode.

While lamenting my struggle with [personal profile] stepnix, he hunted down a lead: a German-language PDF of "books you need to know."

Let's go down to page 27!

Er, not what the PDF says is page 27. What the PDF says is page 29. We can actually identify some exact lines from the screenshot in this page!

  • und Fantasie. In Die unendliche
  • Poesie als Medien der Selbst- und
  • als wirksame Möglichkeit, Realität zu
  • wechselseitigen Einflusses von Vorstellung-
  • allem an der altersgerechten
  • Ziele orientierten Jugendliteratur

Now, here's the issue: this PDF, according to the information on the sixth page of the PDF, appears to be a digitized copy of a booklet (or excerpt of a larger book?) published by Duden in 2011. Princess Tutu, meanwhile, aired on Japanese television in 2002.

I sincerely doubt Ikuko Itoh, Junichi Sato, or anyone else who was working on the anime are secret time travelers. Which means that there must be an older source for this writeup on Die unendliche Geschichte.

In the meantime, here's a Google Translate version of the quoted passage:

The central theme of the young adult novel, which has become a cult classic for adults, is the relationship between reality and fantasy. In The Neverending Story, art and poetry assert themselves as media for self-discovery and understanding the world, and fantasy proves to be an effective way to change reality. The exploration of the reciprocal influence of worlds of imagination and ideas opened up new perspectives for young adult literature, which until then had primarily focused on adapting social themes and educational goals to suit the age group.

Finally, though! Now when I say "there's a link between this anime and The Neverending Story", I have something to point to!

For some reason-- probably because I was so tired, lol-- it didn't occur to me last night that I should go to bed early. Instead, my mind was set on staying up until a time when I'd usually go to bed. I still slept pretty well but didn't wake up feeling refreshed as I'd so foolishly expected. Ah, well. Maybe if I sleep well enough tonight, I'll get that refreshed feeling tomorrow instead. I could certainly use it. I tore my room apart trying to figure out where I'd put some things the last time I reorganized and where I'd put a couple of gifts for one of my nephews. Found exactly none of those things, btw. So I need to find all that as well as put the place back together. Which I meant to do today but, well. Obviously, I did not.

So, I've decided to upload an image (mentioned but not shown directly on Ms. Keeper's blog post) related to the concepts directly onto my account for future use:
